A RESOLUTION TO COMMEND SENATOR GREY F. FERRIS FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE.

WHEREAS, after serving eight years as State Senator, Grey F. Ferris has chosen not to seek reelection to the Mississippi Senate, as he is running in the Democratic Primary for the statewide office of Lieutenant Governor; and

WHEREAS, Senator Ferris was elected to the Mississippi Senate in 1992 representing District 23 (Issaquena and Warren Counties), and in his first term served as Vice-Chairman of the Senate Education Committee; and

WHEREAS, Grey is currently Chairman of the Senate Education Committee and is one of the Senate's most outspoken, informed advocates for public education in Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, in 1997 he introduced and guided to passage the historic Mississippi Adequate Education Funding Program (MAEP), which seeks to guarantee all children in Mississippi an adequately-funded education which is crucial for the development of our state, and also was instrumental in teacher licensure revision legislation and impaired school conservatorship legislation; and

WHEREAS, beginning in his first year in the Senate he was chosen to handle the Appropriation bills for the Medicaid program, the Department of Human Services and all education budgets and teacher salary bills, always explaining the most complex issues with skill; and

WHEREAS, his record as Senator is fully recognized by all responsible citizens and public officials who attest to the tremendous progress made in public education programs while he served:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and recognize Senator Grey Ferris, whose outstanding service enriched everyone with whom he was associated, and we wish Grey and his family much success in their future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Senator Grey Ferris.
